A long way to the West

The Ukrainian President is rare in Kiev. Poroshenko is involved in Shuttle diplomacy and enjoys its role as a European with good, possibly even better ties with the United States than some EU politicians. Indeed, during the election campaign and also after the entry of Donald trump in the position it was supposed that he fell under the influence of the aura of the influential head of the Kremlin Vladimir Putin and what he plans closer ties with Moscow — and all this at the expense of the Ukrainians, or at least using their head.

These fears Kiev was not confirmed, instead, trump has formulated its support for the Ukrainian position, and Congress, to the dismay of the EU, has recently adopted the law on strengthening of sanctions against Russia. So last week Poroshenko first to arrive at the European people’s party summit in Brussels to seek a common solidarity there, then he went to Washington, where he met with a man who does not get tired to stress the government in Kiev, still hasn’t met Putin and U.S. President trump.

American did not give any advice, said clearly pleased with Poroshenko after the meeting, “but asked how he can help.” Then on Monday, Poroshenko called for in the Paris of the new French counterpart Emmanuel Macron (Emmanuel Macron), not forgetting before leaving another to give an interview to Ukrainian television in which he listed what VIPs are expected in the coming weeks in Kyiv: Minister of foreign Affairs and the Minister of defense, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg (Jens Stoltenberg), the UN Secretary-General antónio Guterres (António Guterres). In the end he still visited the Slovakian border, to celebrate the introduction of visa-free travel to the EU.

According to the survey, a long-time rival Yulia Tymoshenko ahead of Poroshenko

That’s clearly the summer of Petro Poroshenko.

He sees it that way. In a television interview he poetically said that the reception of the Ukrainian delegation in Brussels showed that EU policy already “speak Ukrainian.” Many years later, Ukraine finally, he said, ceased to be merely the object of someone else’s foreign policy. The country began to exert their influence on important political decisions in the world

In fact, the role of Kiev, also because of the ongoing war in the Donbass, in international terms depends on the relations with its neighbours, with the EU and the US, with Putin’s Russia. But Poroshenko Ukraine certainly have moved closer to the West than anyone knew four years ago. In the summer of 2013 the Association Agreement with the European Union was ready. Brussels insisted on the fulfillment of certain conditions for ratification. Moscow interfered massively in Kiev, and in the end something happened that was planned for months: then-President Viktor Yanukovych went back on his word, the Agreement was not accepted. The result was the euromaidan.

This Agreement was concluded six months later, but while still still has temporary value. But now, after a long trial of strength in the Netherlands, finally everything is settled. In mid-July at the summit EU-Ukraine in Kiev should be celebrated the completion of this long journey to the Association. 1st September, the package must also formally enter into force.

In Brussels stressed that the success of has long been visible. For example, the volume of trade between the EU and Ukraine has increased from 2015 to 2016 ten percent. However, constantly States that it is not a free ticket for entry into the EU in the next two to three decades, and Vice versa. Ukraine firmly bet on the fact that it can go faster. Ukrainians are still the European optimists. Vyacheslav Golub of the known research of the Razumkov center calls the project of rapprochement with the West “the European reforms, without European prospects.” As for their President, he adorns himself with foreign policy successes because in political life things are not going so well. Polls show that Poroshenko is not very popular, his performance reaches approximately twelve percent, while his longtime rival Yulia Tymoshenko from the party “Fatherland” as a potential candidate for the presidency in 2019 ahead of him with about 15%. The head of the opposition party formed from former party supporters of Yanukovych, “Party of regions”, also shows the best results.

Analysts say that Poroshenko and his cronies in his parliamentary party “Block of Petro Poroshenko” are, however, extremely corrupt. And really — the President and oligarch Poroshenko is well settled in power: its status in recent years. Serhiy Leshchenko, a journalist and MP, says that Poroshenko is sabotaging the reform. According to Leshchenko, wants to be re-elected, and “it reduces his willingness to unpopular measures.” Poroshenko would, if he could even undo what has been achieved in the fight against corruption, says Leshchenko.

Poroshenko, meanwhile, prefers to celebrate your next success during the state visit to Paris. There Makron assured his counterpart that France never recognized the annexation of Crimea by Russia. Ukrainians it is very pleasant to listen to.
