Poroshenko: Ukraine does not prohibit the study of the language of national minorities, but every child should know Ukrainian

Every child who graduated from Ukrainian school, must be fluent in the Ukrainian language, but the language of national minorities to study is not prohibited. This was stated by the President Petro Poroshenko during a meeting with leaders of Ukrainian community and representatives of Crimean Tatar organizations in new York on September 18.

“We are returning Ukraine to a Ukrainian school, it’s very simple. While we do not prohibit learning the language of national minorities, but each child, after finishing Ukrainian school, must be fluent in the Ukrainian language. We must protect Ukraine,” he said.

As reported, on September 5 the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law “On education”, which envisages reforming of the educational sphere. The law introduces 12-year secondary education in Ukraine. The law stipulates that the language of the educational process in educational institutions is the state language – Ukrainian.
