Deterrence of threats on the Eastern frontier: what they say in Brussels, NATO defence Ministers

In Brussels in the headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) began a two-day meeting of defense Ministers of member countries of the Alliance.

As reported in this meeting for the first time will take part the new Secretary of the Department of defense James Mattis.

“Today we will discuss our progress on the Eastern borders of the Alliance. We place four multinational battle group in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, to send a clear signal of the commitment of NATO to defend any ally,” said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

The Ministers will focus on ensuring the strength and flexibility of the Alliance in the context of the challenges posed to NATO.

They will review progress of the increasing presence of the Alliance on the Eastern borders of NATO in the framework of the policy of strengthening the defense and deterrence of threats.

Also, the defense Ministers of countries-members of the Alliance appreciate the current situation to determine what further steps could be taken by NATO in the fight against terrorism.

Separately during the meeting of defense Ministers of countries-members of NATO will be a meeting of the Commission NATO-Georgia.

Recall that the US sent South of Romania military equipment, including tanksand 50 personnel, which will be based at the military base “Mihail Kogalniceanu”.

In 2016 the defense spending of the countries-members of NATO has increased to 10 billion U.S. dollars. The NATO Secretary General noted that this is an important step for strengthening of defense of the countries-members of the Alliance. Stoltenberg noted that the indicator of 2% is made up of five countries, Romania and the Baltic States are approaching this level.

As reported, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite said that during the Russian exercises “West” along the borders of the Baltic countries will deploy troopswho “defiantly preparing for war with the West.”
