Scientists: black tea and wine can ease flu symptoms

Researchers from the school of medicine at Washington University found that the antioxidants in red wine, blueberries, and black tea help to prevent getting the flu.

Having studied the microflora of the human intestine, scientists have found a bacterium called Clostridium orbiscindens. The experts came to the conclusion that it is able to metabolize flavonoids to positively influence the body’s immune response.

Thaddeus Stappenbeck, head of the study, which was published in the journal Science, said: “in Order to protect yourself from the flu, it is important to include in your diet products with flavonoids. It is necessary that your intestines were bacteria capable of using them to control the immune reaction.”

The team now plans to study other types of bacteria that live in the intestines and use flavonoids to boost the immunity of the organism to infections.
