The EU has responded to the scandal of the law “On education”

The European Union welcomed the intention of Ukrainian authorities to appeal to the Council of Europe for expert evaluation of the law “On education” and the urge to do it as soon as possible.

This is stated in the comments of the speaker of the External diplomatic service of the EU Maya Kocijancic.

She stressed that during the communication of the EU representatives with the Ukrainian authorities, the European side has always stressed that legislation must comply with the international obligations that Ukraine undertook in the framework, particularly the framework Convention for the protection of national minorities of the Council of Europe and the European Charter for regional and minority languages.

“As noted in the preliminary opinion of the Venice Commission, the role of Ukrainian language as the state language and the protection of minorities and regional languages need to be carefully balanced. We welcome the intention of the Ukrainian authorities to request the expert opinion of the Council of Europe and urge to do it as soon as possible. This opinion should be duly taken into account, both from the point of view of his position, and from the point of view of the introduction of the legislation,” – said Kosyanchich.

We will remind, on September 5 the Verkhovna Rada adopted the education reform, which is based on the law “On education”. September 25, Petro Poroshenko signed the law.
