At the meeting with Poroshenko trump unpleasant misspoke about Ukraine

During yesterday’s meeting at the White house with Ukrainian leader Petro Poroshenko, the President of the United States Donald trump talked about Ukraine, substituting the word “the” (the Ukraine), reports “Correspondent” with reference to the Washington Post.

The American newspaper noted that this version of the word “Ukraine” in English is offensive to Ukrainians. The point is that with this article (“the”) Ukraine was called, while in the USSR – the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.

In addition, according to WP, this article is a reference to the old Slavonic word “suburb”. American journalists have suggested that trump is in this sense may consider Ukraine just a neighbor of Russia and not a sovereign state.

In turn, the former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul in the social network stressed that before the meeting with Poroshenko trump was not informed about such nuances.

The definite article “the” in English is included in the names of countries that are unions – the United Kingdom – the United Kingdom or the United States – the United States, the Philippines – Philippines.

We will remind, yesterday Poroshenko has held a meeting with Donald trump at the White house, during which the leaders discussed issues of Donbass, anti-Russian sanctions and the Ukrainian President even sent a letter to Ukrainian hostages.

In turn, the American leader said about the very good discussion, during which there has been significant progress.
