Spooky study: 7 in 10 women freeze up during rape

Most women with rape fall into a stupor, which allows them to resist.

Figured it out by Scandinavian experts. The results of their study were published in the journal Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica.

According to them, in the future, these women are significantly more likely to suffer from severe depression and post-traumatic stress disorder than those who still attempted to fight off the rapist. Although it is believed that the rape victim must resist and fight back, in practice, many in this situation are as if paralyzed.

This phenomenon scientists call ‘ tonic immobility, thanatosis — a protective reaction of the animal to the feeling of abject terror. Although people have this condition have been studied little as the study authors write, it has much in common with catatonic stupor when the person is unable to move or speak.

During the study, researchers interviewed about 300 women, who in the period from February 2009 to December 2011 treated in the emergency Clinic for raped women in Sweden.

The results showed that Thanatos rape were experienced by 70% of respondents, and 48% of cases it was expressed in an extreme degree. Women who have experienced tonic immobility, subsequently twice as likely to develop PTSD and 3.4% — severe depression compared to those who were able to resist.

In addition, if a woman has previously had to endure a rape, then the probability of torpor was two times higher. The use of alcohol in the last 12 hours before the rape reduced the likelihood of Tanatos.
