Kravchuk praised the restoration of the nuclear potential

In my time the restoration of the nuclear potential would be worth $ 45 billion., now – 100. This was stated by the first President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk, reports channel “112 Ukraine”.

“When the question was raised in my time, we believed that the recovery of nuclear weapons – $ 45 billion. I think now it is 100. I don’t know where these gentlemen see the money now, if you take the purely financial. Theoretically, the state could produce a nuclear weapon. Maybe North Korea, and the Ukraine. If I had the money, were the appropriate conditions, I would have looked, this is the world. I am convinced, both then and now Europe and the United States would be strongly opposed to the increase on the world map nuclear-weapon States. I would be against it for another reason. I believe that nuclear weapons, any weapon of mass destruction is not the main factor to ensure peace. The world is without weapons. Negotiations through diplomatic channels. If, as they say, on the wall in the theater hangs a gun, it will shoot. So here,” – said Kravchuk.

Recall the fundamental principles of nuclear-free (“not accept, produce or acquire nuclear weapons”) was enshrined in the Declaration on state sovereignty of Ukraine adopted by the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR on 16 July 1990.

November 16, 1994 Ukraine joined the Treaty on the nonproliferation of nuclear weapons of 1 July 1968. These actions were approved that Ukraine is the owner of all nuclear weapons inherited from the Soviet Union and fully intends to get rid of it, in the future, using nuclear energy exclusively for peaceful purposes. In exchange, the major nuclear powers were to guarantee Ukraine’s security and exclude any forms of aggression or pressure.

Despite the accession to the Treaty on the nonproliferation of nuclear weapons and the commitments of all nuclear weapons on its territory, December 5, 1994 between Ukraine, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States signed the so-called Budapest Memorandum, in which the above-mentioned member States had to respect the independence, sovereignty and existing borders of Ukraine, to refrain from any manifestations of aggression against Ukraine, including from economic pressure. June 2, 1996 Ukraine officially lost its nuclear status.

The foreign Ministry of Ukraine after the beginning of the aggression of the Russian Federation repeatedly declared that Russia ignores the provisions of the UN Charter and comply with its obligations under the Budapest Memorandum. At the same time, the Russian foreign Ministry says that the country has not violated the Budapest Memorandum.

Deputies from the “Freedom” of 23 July 2014 has registered a draft resolution on the restoration of Ukraine’s nuclear status.
