Spinach is a powerful source of fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals. And most importantly, spinach is a low calorie food. Despite all the beneficial properties of spinach, there are several categories of people that it is contraindicated for health reasons.

The Egyptian edition of “Masrawy” quotes the article published on the websites of the “Livestrong” and “PaleoHacks”, which referred to five categories of people whom you do not want to use spinach as food. Below we will discuss them in more detail.

1. People suffering from renal insufficiency

Spinach contains high amounts of oxalates which increase the risk of kidney stones. It should be noted that the interaction of oxalate with calcium in the human body leads to the formation of stones especially in the kidneys.

2. Allergies

People with allergies should not consume the spinach in the food, as it contains histamine, which leads to increased itching, skin irritation and edema of the hands and feet.

3. Diabetics

Spinach reduces the level of sugar in the blood, especially when interacting with drugs for the treatment of diabetes. Therefore, undesirable for diabetics to eat spinach in the food if they want to avoid complications due to low blood sugar.

4. Small children up to four months

Spinach contains nitrates, which when injected into the body of a small child under the age of four months increases the risk of developing serious complications increasing the level of hemoglobin in the blood.

5. People suffering from gout

Spinach contains purine. Thus, when people suffering from gout, eat spinach, in the blood significantly increases the level of uric acid. This, in turn, leads to the deposition of uric acid salts in the joints which cause painful symptoms of gout.
