Team spirit: tips on how to organize collective work

World-famous American choreographer Twyla Tharp in his new book, “the Habit of working together” (publishing house Mann, Ivanov and Ferber) shares his experience of successful communication with people.

Collaboration is a great way to work for some of us and inevitable for most. Twyla Tharp touches such complex cooperation, such as working with virtual partners, those who are above you on the status of work with “toxic” partners, work in conditions when it gets out of control and much more.

Read 12 Sovetov about how to build relationships, to work in different conditions and in different types of cooperation with partners and friends organizations to avoid problems and benefit.

1. Together, you can get more out of life

Only by working in a team, you can get more capabilities, knowledge, power, than each singly. More and more people today are beginning to understand that the presidents of companies and policy format “canny”, and other vigilantes, outdated role models. Let in the media about them yet and not bad to say, but the new heroes of humanity — the people who know how to find allies, to assemble a team and move together towards a common goal.

Take any major project, and will see the cooperation at the levels, the existence of which just a few years ago it was hard to imagine. The real success stories of our time — sports teams, political campaigns, businesses — they are about collaboration and joint effort.

“Cooperation” is the key word of the new Millennium.

2. People create Problewe. Humbleecamping

Yes, people are people. They always create problems. But — and this is a very significant “but” — to find common ground easier with those who have experience of cooperation, than with those who are crazy about their exclusivity.

Recall, for example, the hero of the “Miracle on the Hudson” — the emergency landing of a passenger airliner on the water new York rivers in 2009. When shortly after takeoff the aircraft collided with a flock of birds and both its engine stalled, the captain of US Airways Chesley Sullenberger managed to safely privodit the plane with 155 passengers and crew on Board. No one was killed. To the question “how did you do it?”, captain sullenberger said:

“I don’t think it is possible to identify one cause, there were many of them. We had an experienced and well-trained crew. With the first officer Jeffrey Skilton teamed up and together solved problems as they come”.

Note the key words in his response: “the experience”… “the crew”… “together”. Sullenberger expressed his idea very clearly. He became the darling of the press and a national hero, but his successful landing, he considers the overall victory of an experienced crew.

3. Team players are not born, them become

Or, to be more precise, day-by-day process activities to cultivate a team spirit with the help of attention, of discipline, of love and of commitment, dedication, and most importantly — using habits.

Important: you cannot force people to cooperate. They can work in the same office or to perform his duties within the work team, but if they’re not interested in it — nothing will. Without the personal involvement — on an emotional level — much will happen.

4. The cooperation starts from the point of view

Cooperation — a practical thing, it is a way to work in harmony with others, but it begins with a point of view. . Think about it: is not there lies the problem yourself? How do you feel about collaboration?

• Do you have sincere affection for friends, family and loved ones?
• Can apply methods of communicating with them in joint work with partners?
• Don’t push away people with excessive honesty?
• Do you share information with colleagues?
• How to respond to problems?
• Whether to support a common goal?

The answers to these questions will help you understand whether you want to actually be a part of something bigger and more meaningful than yourself, to contribute to the common cause and benefit.
To cooperate you need to get used to.

The first time the need to put the project above their own interests may seem abnormal and wrong, but overcome the discomfort and you are on the right track. Try to change your attitude and see how the react team.

5. If possible, work with those who are better than you

if you are a Manager, don’t be afraid to work in a team of experienced, intelligent and sociable people. Watch them and learn. Pretty soon you will feel that you no longer perceive the command as a lazy-imposed evil, and will find new possibilities and reach new heights.

Even if colleagues are smarter? Hardworking? Smarter? More imaginative? Yes. It’s like tennis: you can improve your skills only by playing with partners at a higher level.

6. Don’t be afraid to work with difficult partners

Partner have to be complicated. Creative differences between open partners can lead to new ideas. Then in case of successful current relationship one plus one will always give more than two.

Mikhail Baryshnikov and Twyla Tharp in all senses were opposites. A native of Russia and a native of the Midwest. The pupil of the classical school and eclectic. As a result of this merger was born the innovative, stunning style of dance, unlike anything from the fact that each of them could create alone.

7. A clear goal is the basis of successful cooperation

Well thought out and clearly articulated shared goal is the basis of successful cooperation.
In Japan, in some companies, tasks and decisions made with help of “rings”. It is a way to gather opinions of all who will be affected by the impact of the adoption of a decision. It works like this: you create a document. Then it is discussed. As the discussion in the document is amended until, until all participants will not agree with him.

Further, all those involved in the decision, agree with the document, putting on his personal seal. It was too long and time consuming? Not at all, because, agreeing with the decision, no one in the future, not subjected to doubt and offers no adjustments. All work, work and work.

8. Make a schedule and stick to it

The first troupe Twyla tarp consisted entirely of brilliant women — smart, talented, strong and independent. They worked together for five years. Without a salary. The main difference between this and any failed project in the discipline. They made a schedule and strictly adhered to. Even if sometimes there was no time, laziness, uncomfortable, not before. They came to rehearsal on time and was always ready to work. Cooperation does not work out, if to meet “sometime.”

The sooner the schedule will be drawn up and approved the procedure of joint work, the fewer obstacles you meet on your way developing your team as a whole.

9. A necessary condition of cooperation is the involvement of all participants

What to involve not only leaders and team members, but everyone who has some relation to the project.

For example, Starbucks launched a website called “My Starbucks idea”, where fans of the brand can make suggestions to improve your favorite coffee shop. Management is exploring all of them, and the best put up for a vote among the visitors. In total, the site has collected about seventy thousand requests.

10. Adapt to changes and stay Zen

Nothing is permanent, all always will change, both inside and outside the team. But that’s Charles Darwin in 1859, said, “Survive is not the strongest and the most intelligent, and those who are better than others adapt to change.”

You will be much easier to adapt to changes, if you stick to this view:

The reality is either perfect except for a few problems, or if we are in a Buddhist tranquility — the ideal completely.

Your perception of reality against chaos. Why allow chaos to win? Do the best we can with the resources that you have, every single day.

11. Thanks

The main partner is not always the one who seems so. The invisible partners often invest in success. Take suggestions and ideas from everyone. Rejoice any proposals, if they benefit your project. And Express gratitude.
Whenever possible, a dozen times a day “thank you” is never superfluous.

12. Cooperation is Love

Our life is a theatre. A theatre in which we all play a major role in a play written for themselves. And the finale of her depends not only on who you are, but also how you interact with other characters in the play.

In the end, every collaboration is a story of love.

And though this path is hard, he is not afraid. Go through it properly. Go through it together. Share with each other. Try to make each other better. Wait for each other when one of you is unable to cope. Hug each other when they do. Be upset with the defeat and enjoy victory. Way more important than the goal.

It’s very simple: if each step is correct, the result will not disappoint.
