Almost half of the population of Estonia is afraid of a military conflict in the country

As shown by the ERGO insurance group and the Latvian research company SKDS study on security in the Baltic States, 45% of Estonian residents fear a military conflict in the country. The highest rate of fear of military conflict observed in 2015, then the figure, compared to this year, was 12% higher. In Latvia, the fear of military conflict 62% and in Lithuania 68% of the population, according to a press release ERGO Insurance SE.

46% of Estonian residents fear possible ethnic clashes and 52% are afraid of economic and political instability. Compared to 2015 both indicators declined slightly, but at the same time increased anxiety in front of a large number of immigrants, including refugees. According to figures for 2017 it fears 60% of estanzuela. Concerns about ethnic conflict in Lithuania the comparable figures for Estonia and make up 41%, but economic or political instability, fear 77% of the population. The lowest among the Baltic countries fear immigrants were in Lithuania, but still it is present in more than half (55%) of the population.

Most of the conflict fear the inhabitants of Latvia. Because of the possible ethnic conflicts are experiencing 54% due to economic or political instability, almost 80% of the population. Also in Latvia most of all fear an influx of immigrants, care 64% of the population.

According to the head of risk life insurance and health ERGO Decli Uusma, the above data is to be expected. “Fear of being in a war zone or in a situation of political instability is obvious due to our geographical position and historical events. Also in our region there was a large ethnic clashes. Therefore, the fear of the new and unknown is quite understandable”, she explained.

On the other hand, the recent terrorist attacks have not increased among residents of Estonia fear of terrorism. To be victims of a terrorist attack fear 23% of estanzuela, which is only 3% more than in 2015. The southern neighbours evaluate the risks associated with terrorism, is somewhat higher: in Latvia this is of concern to 38% in Lithuania and 32% of the population.

“The data seem to reflect that in our region there was a serious retreat from terrorism. But we noticed that people, before going on a journey, more asking will act in a life insurance contract or travel if the person became a victim of terrorist attacks,” led Uusma example of life.

Evaluation of the security of the state is one of the five main criteria of ERGO for the compilation of the index the security of the Baltic States. Compared to inhabitants of Latvia and Lithuania, extensibility feel most protected in the security of the state.

The study was conducted jointly with the Latvian centre for research of public opinion SKDS. It was attended by a thousand people from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. All replies have been received 3 thousand people.
