How to discuss salary at the interview: tips from the recruiter

One of the most embarrassing questions in the job interview is the salary question. How to understand don’t overstate/understate your requirements of the salary and when it is appropriate to talk about salary in the interview, knows rabota.ua.

Why are the candidates afraid to talk about money

The main reason we do not consider wages as a payment for the result of our work. Candidates used that the different positions imply a certain level of income, and go from there.

This gives rise to a few extremes:

  • High self-esteem. People want to get a certain amount, just because he decided so. And voiced to the employer an amount which is significantly above market. Often this sin yesterday’s students, who have no understanding, they pay money.
  • Low self-esteem. The applicant voiced low wages, despite their professionalism. Because it evaluates itself instead of evaluate the benefits of their work for the company. Employers or scared low “price” (for them it is often a signal of incompetence), or take such a specialist and deliberately underpaid him.
  • A losing position. The employer takes staff little money, adding to it at the same functionality, but without changing the salary.

How to create a “price”

Wages are paid for results, which the employee brings to the company. To create a cherished amount, offer a simple algorithm.

1. Determine what the salary the market offers

— Review resumes on job search sites: what amount of asking applicants with the same experience as you.

— Analyze what the salary listed in the job your level.

— View related salaries in the job search sites or in the media.

— Average amount.

2. Determine your minimum salary and maximum

— Determine the amount below which you are not able to consider the proposals. On it you will lean in a pinch. For example, if there are no options or employer will be very attractive, but would be ready at first to only pay you the money.

Print the desired amount. This salary is based on your “list”. It can be for you a beacon: if you can agree to work for more money, you will have the motivation through time to reach this amount. The same amount can be oriented, if the employer can’t give you anything but wages.

In the formation of the desired salary be guided by the average market amount. If you ask employers salary much higher your resume will be less to see, and hence, the job search may be delayed.

— Decide for yourself how much you are willing to lower the desired level of wages and under what conditions: opportunity for career growth, training, insurance or what’s important to you.

Whether it is necessary to specify the size of the salary in the summary

Simple answer: if you have critical amount, for example, 10 000 UAH, and you will not consider offers below – it makes sense to specify it in the summary. While many employers who have less budget, you will not be disturbed.

If you brought for yourself payroll “fork” and are willing to deviate from the desired amount – can be omitted. Then after the issue of a recruiter, you will be able to call this number and to lower it if the company can’t give you a salary.

When to ask about salary during the interview

The main rule is to be prepared for the question about salary. There are several approaches in the discussion of desired salary: to wait, when asked, and ask yourself.

1. To wait to ask for more money

The first approach is more correct. It is assumed that the HR Manager discusses with the candidate the salary in the phone interview or at the end of the first interview. If the interview comes to an end, have you been offered to ask questions, and talk about money has not risen, it is recommended to ask this question to the personnel Manager.

2. To ask about the salary first

The second approach is a losing call. It is considered that if the applicant is the first to speak about the salary, it may seem like a person that only care about money and not to work. Indeed, sometimes it happens. So in talking about the RFP it is important to consider all the time and wording.

Time. To ask about the salary taken at the end of the first interview. Why not at the beginning? Because the employer evaluates you, and then you – the employer. If you start a conversation about money at the beginning of the conversation, the impression that you still what to do, just to pay.

If you critically do not waste time on an interview and you want to know the salary during telephone conversations, at the end of a conversation, you can say that I count on a particular amount, and ask how real it is. Often employers do not raise wages, but I can tell you whether your wishes in a possible budget.

Wording. Do not think that voicing your expected income, you will somehow scare or astonish recruiter. Latest discuss salary issues constantly, and your question will not surprise them. But the conclusions about you as a candidate make sure.

Bad options:

— “How much pay?”

“What offer?”

— “What is your salary?”

Good options:

— “What’s the incentive system provided for this position?”

— “What wages are for this position?”

— “I expect (sum). How is that possible?”

What is important to consider when discussing salary

Taxes. Wage taxes (call it “dirty”) and after taxes (“net”). Always check with the employer that you are really talking about “net” wage, then the amount has not become for you an unpleasant surprise.

Probation. Often employers pay on probation less, and after passing it – reconsider the level of wages. If you promise a review after the trial period, specify – a revision will be necessary or may be “the results of labor.” This is important: review “on results of work” may not be, if the employer decides that the results are insufficient.

Agreement. If a company has a practice to issue the candidate a job offer – a job offer, make sure the amount of it was provided with the agreements and it was clear, after taxes or deductions. If you specified the revision of wages after the trial period, make sure that it is also written.
