The German Ambassador explained his controversial statement on the elections in Donbass

Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Ernst Reichel explained that he was talking about creating the necessary conditions for holding elections in the Donbass, when he suggested that elections in the occupied part of Donetsk and Lugansk regions will be held in the presence of the Russian army.

About Reichel said the people’s Deputy Serhiy Leshchenko in the presence of journalists.

Today, the German Ambassador refused to talk to journalists about his statements about the possibility of holding elections in Donbas in the presence of Russian troops.

At the same time, Reichel met the guests who arrived for the event in the Embassy of Germany, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Germany and Ukraine, and the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Embassy of Germany in Kiev.

In particular, during communication with Leshchenko Ambassador agreed with the Deputy that his interview to one of editions was controversial. The MP told the diplomat: “Today you gave a very controversial interview”. In turn, Reichel said, “I know.”

Leshchenko added that along with other politicians, it was decided that it was better to maintain dialogue than to boycott relations with the Embassy. MP also handed to the Ambassador a statement factional group “European optimists” on December 31, 2016 about the “painful compromises”, which relates to the article businessman Victor Pinchuk in the U.S. edition of The Wall Street Journal.

Reichel agreed that it was best to maintain good relations.

Leshchenko also said that at the end of 1980-ies of the German party really could participate in election campaigns, but the current situation in the Donbass, the Ukrainian party cannot participate in elections, and the Ukrainian media are unable to cover these elections.

“Yes… I agree with you that this is the situation today. What I mean is how to create the conditions…,” said Reichel, referring to the necessary conditions for holding elections in the Donbass.

As reported in an interview with RBC-Ukraine Reichel confirmed the existence of a German-French version of the “road map” implementation of the Minsk agreements. He did not go into the specifics, but even the General thesis give reason to believe that this option will not be unconditionally perceived in Ukraine. In particular, the diplomat suggested that elections in the occupied part of the Donbass can be held in the presence of the Russian army. All, he said, will depend on the conditions under which these elections will be held.

Reichel and has repeatedly stated that the elections in the Donbass, under certain conditions, can be carried out to establish Ukraine’s control over the occupied territories. In particular he spoke about it during his visit to Kharkov on 14 December 2016 and in an interview with Radio Liberty on 21 December 2016.

6 Feb diplomat, claiming that the situation is identical, recalled the last parliamentary elections under the Communist regime in the German Democratic Republic, which took place in the presence of the Western group of the Armed forces of the Soviet Union.
