NATO will not fight Russia for the liberation of Ukraine – Deputy head of the European Parliament

The NATO countries are ready to support the democratic aspirations of Ukraine, but the conflict with Russia because it will not. This opinion was expressed in an interview with DW, the Deputy Chairman of the European Parliament, the Deputy from the Free democratic party of Germany, Alexander Graf Lambsdorff.

He noted that the West and further in the position of non-recognition of the annexation of Crimea by Russia.

“Was committed a gross violation of international law. We do not recognize Russia’s actions against Crimea. This means that even if in fact the return of Crimea to Ukraine is impossible, because nobody wants escalation of the violence, from a legal point of view, we do not recognize the Russian Crimea. It is an absolutely clear line. Virtually the entire world adheres to this position,” said Lambsdorff and added that the Kremlin “not burning” desire to discuss the issue of de-occupation.

He also noted that the countries-members of NATO have no desire to accept Ukraine into the Alliance and then getting involved in a conflict with Russia.

“I see a willingness to stabilize the situation in Ukraine, to contribute to its democratic development and its economic growth. But to guarantee compliance with the 5th article of the NATO Charter (in Ukraine – ed.) which regards an attack on one NATO country as an attack on all NATO countries, I don’t see the willingness to do so” – said the German politician on the question of whether to accept Ukraine into NATO.

As day said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Ukraine should go to NATO with “substantive (independent) partnership”. In his opinion, first and foremost, Ukraine needs to strengthen defense institutions.
