Monday, may 12, the mayor of Rome VA Raja has signed the decree, forbidding to bathe in the fountains, sit and climb on it, near the fountains, litter and throw into the water objects, except for coins as a traditional gesture for good luck or to soon return.
The ban is designed to protect about 40 fountains that have artistic and historical value. “Everyone should respect the beauty of Rome,” said Raja.
The penalty for violating the ban range from 40 to 240 euros.
Also the police of the municipality was requested to thoroughly patrol the area near the fountains.
