Danish missile defense can escalate the conflict with Russia

“If Russia will attack using all his power, that missile defence will cope with this attack. Russia has many nuclear weapons of various types,” says Carsten Marup (Karsten Marrup), major and chief of air operations Centre of the Military Academy.

Henrik Dam Kristensen, Henrik (Henrik Dam Kristensen), responsible of the Social democratic party for defence, considers that it is necessary to think carefully about the Russian threat before starting negotiations on the defence budget in the fall. And here may be raised the question of missile defense in the Baltic sea.

“I’m worried about what is happening in Kaliningrad, with its many missiles we need to ensure the safety of the Danes. It requires accurate analysis of what needs to be done to the Danes, was protected from the aggression that we see from the Russian side,” says Henrik Dam Kristensen.

Correspondent DR: the Military Academy does not believe that the Danish anti-missile shield can stop a Russian attack. Then why do we need it?

Henrik Dam Kristensen: on the missile defense shield there are different opinions. I think we need to hold talks about the new defense budget, on the basis that we should not spend more money than we spend today. If we need to spend more money, only in order to ensure the safety of the Danes.

The risk of exacerbation

Danish missile defense against Russia would be contrary to the plans of NATO on the European missile defence is not directed against Russia.

“NATO for a long time explained to Russia that this missile shield is not aimed at their objects, says Karsten Marup. — If Denmark will create a missile shield against the Russian, it is possible that this will exacerbate the conflict with them.”

Henrik Dam Kristensen is however stressed that the big problem is that Russian.

“I don’t want any relapses. The aggravation created Russian. After this they occupied the Crimea. That they conduct active actions in Baltic sea. They put quite a large number of missiles in Kaliningrad”.

— You don’t trust the Russian?

— No, I don’t think there is a reason. I don’t think we should panic, but I think we have to be very vigilant about what is happening in Russia.

Karsten Marup offers is missile defense to strengthen the existing armed forces.

“It is better to spend money on the armed forces that we have, strengthen their capabilities,” says major Military Academy.
