Statement of Nikki Haley in Ukraine at the UN security Council came as a surprise to Russia – Yelchenko

Before the new us permanent representative to the UN, Nikki Haley voiced a strong and committed U.S. position on the situation in Eastern Ukraine, she personally has thoroughly studied this issue, including in dialogue with the Ukrainian colleagues. This was told by the permanent representative of Ukraine to the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko, reports “UKRINFORM”.

“In my opinion, the U.S. permanent representative fully informed of developments regarding the situation in the Donbas and knows everything about the Crimea. Voiced her position confirms that the new US administration is fully acquainted with the situation in Ukraine continues to occupy a strong position on this issue”, – said the head of the Ukrainian mission.

He also reported that he had met with Nikki Haley before the Security Council meeting on Ukraine and conducted a “detailed briefing” on the situation in the Donbas.

However, the Ukrainian diplomat expressed his belief that the Russian side was at least shocked by the rigid position of the United States against the background of statements of the new administration about the possibility of improving relations with Russia.

“I saw the facial expression of Mr. Churkin at the moment. It seems to me that for him it was somewhat surprising. He did not expect such harsh statements by the new Ambassador to the United States. By far,” – said the representative of Ukraine.

Yelchenko confirmed Ukraine can count on the continued support from the United States to the UN and maintenance of international pressure on the Russian Federation. “I am absolutely sure,” – said the diplomat.

He added that the UN security Council meeting confirmed the attitude of the international community in support of Ukraine.

As reported, at the meeting of the UN security Council, Western countries condemned Russia and urged it to influence the militants to stop the ongoing escalation of the conflict in the Donbass.
