The Minister for foreign Affairs Anders Samuelsen (Anders Samuelsen) argues, like his predecessor, that Denmark as a small country interested in world order, based on norms, and that the idea of spheres of interests is outdated. Therefore, the EU should continue sanctions against Russia until, until it begins to adhere to the norms of the international legal system.
I don’t agree. Anyone who says that areas of interest have not, far from reality. People, States, and organizations want power — and power is in those areas where you can dominate. Such banal truth in the modern world has not been canceled.
But it is possible that organizations such as the UN, EU and NATO believe that they cancelled thinking based on power and replaced it with law and order, where everything is based on right and wrong, not yours and. But they forget — and that’s the problem — that their own ideas about what is good and what is bad, predominate only in those places where power FROM THEM.
To determine what rules should apply in some region, it means to have power in the region.
Therefore, the policy of sanctions in relations with Russia is the good old struggle for power. When/if Russia will give up: give the Crimea and stop supporting the rebels in the Donbass, it will mean that Russia capitulated and refused to conduct an independent policy. It is agreed that there are other forces that can determine what policy it to conduct.
Forces that believe that they are acting for the benefit are the EU and NATO. They think that they are allowed to decide what is good and what is bad: you can justify and wars of conquest — for example, Kosovo in 1999, Iraq in 2003 and Libya in 2009. These wars are justified by certain standards. Russia justifies its actions to other rules — a few more national. That is the essence of the struggle. In the norms. Should we today be national?
In the international world order we’re talking about today, to think in national categories is virtually banned. We have to think about the good and the bad, not allowing anything national. Therefore, the part of the international world order, which we are subject, namely the EU, in addition to everything else, and especially anti-national.
We in the EU should not have boundaries — they are bad and national. But why the abolition of our borders needs to be in the interests of Denmark? We’re not a nation state. And the nation-state since 1648, is the bedrock and Foundation of our freedom.
Of course, it’s not is that we are born with an obvious interest in the international legal order, if this order is wrong. In EU law there is a lot of bad. Our main interest is to hold on to superpower, which will contribute to preserving the system that gave us the freedom — as a nation-state. The United States is doing, basically. Therefore, it is important for us to hold on to the US within NATO. So we have a non-European friend who can help us if we ever have a problem with the European superpower. Actually it would be great if we could persuade the good superpower — in this case, the United States — to see us as part of the scope of their interests!
Because of interests and power — concepts that apply not only to the past. Today they are simply dressed up in nice words — such as human rights and justice. But this should not lead us to ensure that we have betrayed their own national interests: to remain a free nation state.
And free national States must understand that it is necessary to respect interests each other and to negotiate, if you suddenly find that the interest in the same region exhibit two States. As in the case of Ukraine today.
Here civilized countries should engage in dialogue and solve the problem of the world, instead of starting a power struggle with the use of sanctions and insurgent groups.
