Cost Germany to confirm the completion of a joint with Russia gas pipeline “Nord stream — 2”, the President of Poland Andrzej Duda announced the beginning of construction of the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline that will link fields on the Norwegian shelf in the North sea to Poland via Denmark and through which Poland can become one of the guarantors of energy security of Ukraine.
The reason for this statement is that Baltic Pipe is not an alternative to SP-2, is an alternative to the Russian branch of the Yamal-Europe, which went through Poland and from the use to which Poland refused. That is, the Polish side stated that it is not going to continue the contract for the supply, which she had with Gazprom.
In other words, Baltic Pipe, as well as the construction of a terminal for liquefied natural gas from the United States in świnoujście, the increase in volumes of own gas extraction, the construction of interconnectors with neighboring countries, reduction of the curves of the economy are steps that have been taken by several governments of Poland, regardless of their political color in order to improve its own energy security.
Poland has fully implemented its plan to stand in a position to Gazprom to abandon its services, while Ukraine signed a very favorable agreement on the extension of transit, as now in Ukraine physical abilities from other sources but producing gas from the transit pipeline, is not enough — they at the level of 7.5 billion cubic meters per year, while Ukraine needs to import be about 10-11 billion. We have nowhere where to get these 3-4 billion cubic meters, except from the transit pipeline, and the lack of one is still not covered and not going to, because Naftogaz considers such projects unprofitable.
Unfortunately, the possibility of Poland’s gas supplies to Ukraine is limited to — Polish direction can be supplied about 2 billion cubic meters of gas, whereas Ukraine from this direction, ready to take about 6.5 billion. But while Naftogaz does not consider the construction of additional Interconnector Ukraine-Poland profitable, we will not be able to use the offer of Poland.
And since the state it does not react and will not wish to increase gas supplies, including with the Polish direction, all plans to ensure their own energy security of Ukraine remain only on paper.
