Detention and deportation from Belarus of the Ukrainian poet Serhiy Zhadan indicate lack of independence of the Belarusian authorities in making important decisions.
This is stated in the official statement of the public organization “Union of Belarusian writers”, the Belarusian Association of journalists, Belarusian PEN-center, “Belarusian Collegium” and the “flying University”.
“We Express indignation due to the shameful detention of the distinguished guest and old friend of Belarus Sergei Zhadan. We are convinced that such actions are evidence of the lack of independence in making important decisions that not only meet the interests of the independent Belarus, but also cause irreparable harm to the image of our sovereign state, but also questioned the role of Belarus as a neutral venue for negotiations in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict,” – said in a statement.
Also the authors of the statement appealed to the competent state authorities of Belarus with a demand to cancel the decision on deportation and a ban on the entry of Zhadan, to bring him a formal apology and to take appropriate measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
As reported, the Ukrainian poet Serhiy Zhadan was detained in the capital of Belarus and interrogated about “terrorism”. Ukrainian authorities have reacted to the arrest of the writer.
First Secretary of the Embassy of Ukraine in Belarus Maria Gutsalo told that the writer today veeram will return to Ukraine.
