Merkel expressed “profound disagreements” with Erdogan

German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed continuing disagreement with the position of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on a number of issues on the basis of bilateral negotiations within the G20. She said this during a press conference in Hamburg.

Following the meeting with Erdogan, Merkel said that Germany “respects the efforts of Turkey in regard to the admission of refugees” forced to flee from Syria because of the civil war.

At the same time, she said that between the two countries remain deeply divided on several issues, including the arrests in Turkey after a failed coup attempt last summer.
