Stoltenberg said that means for Ukraine the accession of Montenegro to NATO

The Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Jens Stoltenberg said that the receipt of Montenegro’s membership in the Alliance signals to all States that also want that NATO’s doors are open. This statement he made on Wednesday in Brussels at the headquarters of NATO before the ceremony of raising the flag of Montenegro.

“Since the founding of the (NATO) we always kept our doors open for those who share our values and can contribute to our safety. The accession of Montenegro sends a message to all States seeking membership, if you walk the path of reforms based on democracy and the rule of law, prove to yourself that you are able to contribute to our collective defense, sharing the responsibility, then you can join the Alliance,” Stoltenberg said.

He noted that the fact that Montenegro became the 29th member of NATO, shows that “NATO’s doors are open, and it also shows that countries which carry out reforms, modernize the structure of defence and security, strengthen democratic institutions, as did Montenegro could also join the Alliance.”

“Today we raise the flag of Montenegro, greeting her membership in the family. NATO is an Alliance of democracies, United by one goal – to stand together and protect each other. Montenegro joins NATO as an equal, will sit at the table and have the same as allies, vote,” – said the NATO Secretary General.

It is known that earlier the speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Andriy Parubiy suggested to fix by law the priority of Ukraine’s accession to NATO.
