Herbert McMaster — Advisor to trump on national security

Palm Beach, Florida. — On Monday, President trump has appointed Lieutenant-General Herbert McMaster (H. R. McMaster) as its new national security adviser. His choice fell on a reputable military strategist, known for his fight against traditional thinking and managed to change the course of the Iraq war in the darkest of her days.

About the decision trump said in the resort town of Mar-a-Lago, where he at the weekend and talked with the candidates to replace Michael Flynn, who was forced to resign due to the concealment of Vice-President Mike Pence of information about his telephone conversation with the Russian Ambassador.

Unlike Flynn, who worked last year as a counselor in the campaign headquarters of Republican General McMaster has nothing to do with trump. McMaster think less ideological person than its predecessor. Proven in combat during the Gulf war and the second Iraq war, General McMaster is considered a person with an exceptionally independent views that sometimes affect his career.

This selection pleased Republicans who admire General McMaster and conducted behind-the-scenes campaign, trying to convince trump to opt for it. A key role was played by the Senator from Arkansas, Tom cotton (Tom Cotton). This former soldier who served under the command of General McMaster, he was nominated by the White house. His candidacy was supported by other conservatives, including senior assistant to the Senator from Arizona, John McCain, and the Minister of defense of Jim Mattis, who served with General McMaster and asked him to consent to this appointment.

Lieutenant-General Herbert McMaster is an outstanding candidate for the position of national security adviser, a man of great intelligence, strong character and extensive abilities.

“This man has tremendous talent and great experience, — said trump reporters, sitting next to General McMaster, wearing a military uniform. — I’ve seen and read about him over the past two days. He is highly respected by all in the army, and his consent to post it is a great honor for us.”

Thus, trump continues to pick up high-ranking military posts associated with national security. Flynn, a retired three-star General, Mattis, the retired four-star General. The Minister of internal security John Kelly marine General retired. First, as adviser for national security trump has offered to Robert Harvard (Robert S. Harward), who refused. Two finalists is also acting and retired officers. General McMaster will remain on active duty.

General McMaster has a rebellious aura that trump’s so important to some Ministers. This was told by a senior administration official, who demanded not to be named, since we are talking about information for internal use. Another candidate, Lieutenant General Robert Caslen (Robert L. Caslen), the commander of West Point, has also made a considerable impression on trump, who called it “a real military”. But the President wanted the General remained in the West point to which he refers with deep respect.

54-year-old General McMaster became known early in his officer career, when he sharply criticized the joint chiefs of staff for his mistakes in Vietnam. He later criticized the Bush administration for the way it started the war in Iraq.

Being in command positions, he gained credibility by showing how to use the strategy of counterinsurgency war to defeat the militants in Iraq. He proved the effectiveness of this strategy adopted by General David Petraeus, to change the dynamics of the war that the United States could lose.

Chunky, lively, courteous, possesses a sense of humor, General McMaster has a rich military experience, but in the maze of Washington policy focuses poorly. This can become a serious problem in new irritable as head of the national security apparatus in which he will have to restore order.

Now he has to take the leadership of the demoralized and frightened by the machine that rebelled against Flynn and still doesn’t know his place in the White house given the fact that the former head of the Agency Breitbart News Stephen Bannon, who became the chief presidential strategist, interested foreign policy.

The meeting with the generals in Mar-a-Lago in Florida. Very interesting!

The national security Council staffed largely by professionals from the military and civil departments, who were there at the time. They privately complain that they are not allowed to do their work and kept in the dark about important decisions taken. Assistants trump look with suspicion on these people, many of whom worked in the previous administration and blame them for the leaks. The atmosphere there is so poisoned that some Council employees talking about them for ongoing surveillance.

Some of the staff of the national security Council said on Monday that he learned about the appointment of General McMaster from the media like everyone else. These employees fear that the supporters of Flynn, whom they contemptuously called Flinstone, not going anywhere. But General McMaster has the advantage because he served in Iraq with some members of Council staff, including Derek Harvey and Joel Rayburn.

According to trump, another a retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg will remain in the post of Executive Secretary of the national security Council. After the resignation of Flynn last week, Kellogg became acting national security Advisor, and was among the four candidates, which on Sunday was interviewed trump, picking up the person for a permanent position. Trump didn’t mention another assistant national security adviser Kathleen Mcfarland, and did not say whether it will keep his post.

General McMaster thanked trump, but his plans didn’t say anything. “I am grateful for this opportunity, — he declared President, and look forward to the moment when will be able to join the national security team to do everything in my power to promote and protect the interests of the American people.”

Another finalist was former US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton, who worked there under Bush. This candid candidacy of a conservative administration trump is considering for the second time, intending to appoint him to high office. On Monday, trump praised Bolton and said I would find him a position.

“It was truly a good meeting. Knows a lot, — said the President. — He has a lot of ideas which I, frankly, agree completely. So we talk to Bolton in another capacity.”

General MacMaster, in 2014, served as Director of the center for the integration of forces and means of the army in Fort Eustis, Virginia. He is a graduate of West point, he defended a dissertation on military history at the University of North Carolina. General McMaster was in command of the division, which in 1991 had fought with the Iraqi Republican guard during one of the biggest tank battles of the Gulf war. For this he was awarded the Silver star.

Wide popularity he received in 1997, wrote the book “Breach of military duty” (Dereliction of Duty). In it, he criticized the joint chiefs of staff because he objected to President Lyndon Johnson during the Vietnam war. It has strengthened my reputation in 2005 during the second Iraq war, when under his command the 3rd armored cavalry regiment took the city of tall afar.

General Petraeus in his guidance on counterinsurgency fight called it exemplary. In the preparation of this manual has also participated Mattis, who was then General of the marine corps. Taking command in Iraq in 2007, General Petraeus used the exact same tactics, strengthening the grouping of troops with the permission of the Bush.

But McMaster could not obtain the rank of General as long as he did not come General Petraeus and defense Secretary Robert gates. One of his protégés was future Senator cotton, who in 2007, nearly left the army, when it seemed that General McMaster’s dismissed.

After the departure of Flynn’s cotton contacted the Pens, ‘bannon and chief of staff of the White house by Pribram Raines, describing the General McMaster and giving them his resume and a personal phone number. Talking about this involved in the work of the staff of the administration. Another intercessor for the General became the Director of the office of the Senate Committee on armed services Chris Brose. The Chairman of this Committee is John McCain.

McCain, who in recent days has sharply criticized trump, spoke positively about the new appointment and said, “I can’t imagine a better, more capable national security team than the one we got.”
