Hungary condemns Ukraine’s attempts to expand the scope of the Ukrainian language, affecting national minorities, including Hungarians. This was stated in interview to the newspaper “Kommersant” the head of the foreign Ministry of Hungary Peter Siyarto.

According to him, if Ukraine will adopt the law, that Hungary will raise the issue at the EU level.

“In November last year the Prime Minister of Ukraine Vladimir Groisman visited Budapest, and we gave him the all clear that will not tolerate any amendments — neither the education law nor the law on the use of language that would worsen the situation of minorities. We heard that this law may not be adopted. And we hope so. If any amendments will worsen the lives of minorities, including Hungarian, then of course we will raise this issue at EU level,” said Siyarto.

He noted that the issue of the expansion of the Ukrainian language beyond the Ukraine as it concerns minorities.

“We have to protect minorities and enforce European standards — including in relation to Ukraine”, – said the foreign Minister of Hungary.

We will remind, in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on 19 January was registered the bill No. 5670 “On language”. The authors propose to expand the scope of use of the Ukrainian language in public life and in the media
