The Federal Bureau of investigation (FBI) has detained a top Manager of the Volkswagen AG Oliver Schmidt on suspicion of involvement in the scandal with understating the emission of harmful gases. About this newspaper The New York Times, citing informed sources.
Schmidt was the head of the engineering and environmental division the American division of Volkswagen in 2014-2015.
According to the newspaper, he was detained on 7 January in Florida and moved to Detroit, where he was charged with criminal conspiracy to defraud the U.S. authorities.
Earlier, the US government arrested the engineer Volkswagen James Liang, who worked in the company for two decades. He pleaded guilty and now faces up to five years in prison.
We will remind, the scandal around the Volkswagen erupted in September 2015, after the us Agency for environmental protection revealed that the company installed in its vehicles with diesel engines computer programs that during inspections understate the emission of harmful substances.
