ABC (Spain): unusual ways to use onion skin

Healthy eating is eating foods with high nutritional value, containing large amounts of macro – and micronutrients. Do not forget about the relationship of nutrition, physical activity and the ability to manage emotions. Lately due to climate change in the concept of healthy eating included the concept of “sustainable food”.

According to the Food and agriculture organization of the United Nations (FAO), it is necessary to change the scheme of food security for the acquisition of habits of rational use of products. So says Marta Moreno (Moreno Marta), one of the creators of the app “Nukula”, which recommended the following: to base a diet on plant foods, i.e. vegetables, legumes, fruits and cereals, buy local produce, reducing consumption of red and processed meat and sugary drinks, eat the fish caught in the rationally arranged bodies of water, and avoid food waste.

However, what can each of us in order to adhere to “sustainable nutrition”? For example, because of the bad color should not throw away overripe bananas that really taste even sweeter. What they can eat? Overripe bananas are used for desserts, as they provide greater sweetness in a natural way. “It is extremely important to use the products. Whenever we’re cooking, throw away a lot of food, for example, vegetable peel, food leftovers or peelings, which we consider useless… for Example, there are several ways to use onion skin,” notes nutritionist application “Nucula” devoted to nutrition, Mar Moreno.

The use of onion peel

Onions — rich and low-calorie product with high water content and fiber. We add onions in most dishes. However, every time during the preparation we make a mistake — throw away all the peel and the solid leaves. If we want efficiently use the products and save money, you can use onion peels for the following purposes:

For herbal infusions

Mar Moreno advises a good wash peel and cook the herbal infusion. Don’t be afraid to try!

— For soups and stews

“Often these meals add the onion whole and then discarded or milled. Instead of onion you can add a shuck, it will give the dish a rich flavor. In addition, most of the nutrients contained in the husk,” said the nutritionist.

— To fertilize plants

Some research suggests the use of onion peel as agricultural fertilizer for clay soils. Thus we can get rid of food waste and to promote reforestation. “You can use the husk as fertilizer for houseplants. Mix onion peels with a small amount of water, leave overnight, then strain and use the solution for watering plants”.

“Thanks contained in the bulb onions to quercetin, the substance of the group of flavonoids, it not only has useful properties, but also contains a pigment that gives vegetable a yellow hue. Basically, it contains in the dry husk. For example, in the red onions, this pigment — the anthocyanins,” explains the nutritionist. And you can paint a t-shirt without the paint, and get rid of food waste. For this you will need cotton clothing, onion skins (yellow or purple color), salt, rope or thick thread, boiling water and vinegar (optional).

“All the better to paint a t-shirt, you should not take new. Heat water in a large pot where you can put clothes, add five tablespoons of salt for every litre of water and stir until dissolved. Then add pre-washed husk without spots. For one cotton t-shirt will need the husk about four bulbs. Simmer until then, until you see that the water changed color. Carefully remove from the water the husk, tie the shirt and dip it into the pot. Simmer about half an hour. If you want to make a color brighter, you can add a drop of vinegar. Remove the shirt from the pan, untie and expand. The first few times it is better to wash the shirt separately,” — emphasizes Mar Moreno.
