Islam in the world, distributed more widely than you think

Recently published presidential decree of Donald trump on a temporary ban on the entry of immigrants from seven Muslim countries will affect only 12% of Muslims in our world. This is evidenced by data from the report of the research organization Pew Research Center from 2015 on the current and projected number of religious groups. In fact, of the seven countries that fall under the new immigration ban (Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen), Iran is among the ten States with the largest Muslim population.

As of 2010, the world was around 1.6 billion Muslims, so Islam is second in number of adherents religion after Christianity. And while many people, especially in the US, associate Islam with countries in the Middle East and North Africa, in fact almost two-thirds of Muslims (62%) live in the Asia-Pacific region, as evidenced by data analysis of the Pew center. So, in India and Pakistan, Muslims live more (in the aggregate $ 344 million) than in the middle East and in East and North Africa (317 million).

However, in the region of the Middle East, East and North Africa — the highest concentration of Muslims in the world. Of the 341 million inhabitants of this region, 93% are Muslims, while in countries of sub-Saharan Africa their 30% and in the Asia-Pacific region — 24%.

Muslims constitute the majority population in 49 countries around the world. The large number (about 209 million) is Indonesia, where 87.2 per cent of the population call themselves followers of Islam. In India, the second largest Muslim population (roughly 176 million) though in percentage terms it accounts for only 14.4 per cent of the total population of the country.

When assessing the number of Muslims and other religious groups in the world Pew Research Center uses a variety of surveys, census data, registers of population, doing this in order to count all groups and individuals who belong to a particular religion.

Looking ahead, the center predicts that by 2050 the number of Muslims in the world will grow to 2.76 billion, accounting for 29.7 per cent of the world population. The percentage of Muslims in African countries South of the Sahara, will increase from 15.5% (2010) to 24.3%. Asia, where today there are more Moslems than all other regions combined (61,7%), will retain their positions, although the proportion of Muslims in the total population there will decrease, amounting to 52.8 per cent. With regard to the Middle East and North Africa, the percentage of Muslims of the total population will remain virtually unchanged, increasing from 19.8% to 20% in 2050.

North America is home to only 0.2% Muslims of the total population. According to forecasts, in the United States the proportion of Muslims among the population will be doubled from 0.9% in 2010 to 2.1% in 2050. This forecast is based on demographic and migration trends.
